History of Kwambo:

KwaMbonambi meaning 'the place where the chiefs gather' is a historical village which was the place where the mighty Zulu King 'Shaka Zulu' spent the first eighteen years of his life with his mother Nandi.

KwaMbonambi is in the middle of nowhere which makes a good base for exploration into the surrounding areas and its game parks, wetlands, rivers and coastline. Kwambonambi about a half hour drive to the oldest game parks in Africa, the wetlands and coastline of St Lucia. The surrounding area is large and unpopulated. For such a teeny town, Kwambonambi is built in giant proportion. The streets are wide and generous, the trees that line them enormous and the oddness extreme.

When King Shaka was the Zulu warrior king, his weapons were made by the master forger craftsmen of Kwa 'People of Mbonambi' and in later years the town became famous for its wilderness areas now known as the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve and the greater St Lucia Wetland Park, which is a world heritage site. These are the oldest reserves in Africa and were opened in 1895.
